ARMS HAUL CASE Nizami, Babar in court for indictment

Chittagong, Oct 25 (bdnews24.com) -- All the accused, including Jamaat-e-Islami chief Motiur Rahman Nizami and former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar, in the two cases relating to the 10-truck arms haul case have been produced before a Chittagong court.

Hearing for framing of charges against all the accused is scheduled to be held on Tuesday with judge S M Mujibur Rahman of Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court-1 in the chair.

Public prosecutor Kamal Uddin told bdnews24.com that the charges would be framed on Tuesday morning in presence of the accused.

On April 2, 2004, police seized 10 trucks of weapons and ammunition from the Chittagong Urea Fertiliser Ltd (CUFL) jetty in Chittagong in the biggest-ever arms haul.

Two cases were filed the next day with Karnaphuli police station against 43 people in this connection. However, names of two accused were dropped after they died.

Following submission of supplementary charge sheets earlier this year, the number of accused stood at 52 in the case filed for smuggling the firearms and 50 in the other case under the arms act.
